Information:

Assistant governors are part of the district leadership team, which also includes the district governor and district committee members. Your primary role is to assist the governor with the administration of your assigned Rotary clubs.

Effective clubs are able to:

  • Sustain and increase their membership base
  • Implement successful service projects that address the needs of their community and communities in other countries
  • Support The Rotary Foundation through both program participation and financial contributions
  • Develop leaders capable of serving Rotary beyond the club level

Your responsibilities before your year in office begins on 1 July include:

  • Providing input to the governor-elect on what the district wants to achieve and the resources necessary to reach district goals
  • Advising the governor-elect on district committee selections
  • Attending the district team training seminar to

– Learn about your role and responsibilities
– Finalize your district’s communication plan
– Establish district goals and objectives for the coming year

  • Meeting with the presidents-elect of your assigned clubs at the presidents elect training seminar (PETS) to implement and review the Club Leadership Plan and begin establishing goals using the Planning Guide for Effective Rotary Clubs
  • Working with the leadership teams of your assigned clubs at the district assembly to further develop club goals and implementation plans
  • Consulting with the outgoing assistant governor to discuss what you can expect when working with club leaders
  • Reviewing RI and Rotary club constitutional documents in the Manual of Procedure (035-EN) and familiarizing yourself with RI policy for clubs and districts

Your responsibilities during your year in office include:

  • Visiting each of your assigned clubs either monthly or quarterly to discuss the business of the club, available resources, and effective management of funds with the club president and other leaders
  • Assisting club leaders in scheduling and planning for the governor’s official visit
  • Attending each club assembly after the district assembly and during the governor’s official visit
  • Keeping the governor updated on clubs and suggesting ways to enhance their development
  • Encouraging clubs to follow through on the governor’s requests and recommendations
  • Monitoring each club’s progress toward its goals for membership, service projects, The Rotary Foundation, club administration, and public relations
  • Coordinating training at the club level with the appropriate district committee
  • Identifying and encouraging the development of future district leaders
  • Attending and promoting attendance at the district conference and other district meetings
  • Participating in Rotary Foundation programs, annual and special giving events, and other assignments as necessary

Rotary’s Constitutional Documents

The Rotary International constitutional documents provide club and districts the foundation for RI’s policies and procedures.

  • Constitution of Rotary International (PDF)
  • Bylaws of Rotary International (PDF)
  • Standard Rotary Club Constitution (PDF) (Word)

All clubs admitted to Rotary membership must adopt this constitution.

  • Recommended Rotary Club Bylaws (Word)

Clubs can tailor these bylaws, as long as their changes align with Rotary’s constitutional documents and the Rotary Code of Policies.

2022 COL Report of Action

The Manual of Procedure offers a concise version of Rotary’s policies and procedures. The manual is geared to Rotary club and district leaders and features information that’s most relevant to their roles. It is published every three years to reflect adopted legislation and decisions of the RI conventions, the Council on Legislation, the Rotary International Board of Directors, and the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation.
